Dear Friends,

This week in Reef and Beef I wrote a little about my vision for the Diocese. I am always a little cautious about visions, but at a foundational level we are called to be communities of love, united by our love of God and each other; and we are further called to take that love into the broader communities in which we live. Some of us are called to be evangelists (Ephesians 4.11) but we are all called to live out the good news. This is our task as Church. In the future I will talk more about how this vision might look in practice. However, I am sure we are not called to be small and shrinking enclaves of righteousness. We must look outwards, recognising our own brokenness and trusting in God. We must repent of all those things that have damaged and hurt the Body of Christ. In so doing we are then free to reach out to our community with love and in so doing proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

Sri Lanka
All of us have been shocked by the recent events in Sri Lanka when terrorists attacked churches and hotels on Easter Sunday. The majority of victims were Catholics worshipping in two churches near Colombo and I was able to join with Bishop Tim Harris to convey our horror in a joint statement. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the multi-faith service which was held while I was out west but our Registrar, the Rev’d Canon Dr Sharon Hayston read out a statement on my behalf. We continue to pray for the people of Sri Lanka, especially for those who mourn and for those who are injured.

Cameron and Renee Wills
We pray for Cameron and Renee Wills at this time. Cameron is the Families Minister at Good Shepherd Church, Edge Hill, Cairns. Sadly Renee has discontinued active treatment for her cancer. We pray for God’s love and mercy for Renee as she turns in trust to our Lord, and for Cameron and their four children as they walk this journey with her. May God be with Renee’s family as they visit. We also give thanks for the love and support given to Cameron and Renee by the ministry team and people at Good Shepherd. Please contact the Rev’d Trevor Saggers for any further information.

Bishop’s Wanderings
After visits to Mackay and then to Cairns before Easter, I have just returned from a visit to Mount Isa and all the Ministry Units on the Flinders Highway. The country is looking remarkably green but the devastation of the recent flooding is all too apparent. There are a number of issues about lay ministry and vocational discernment that have been raised in all my visits which I will address in my report to Synod. We also pray for Joanna and Geoff as they mourn their mother June Dolgner, who was a stalwart of the church in Richmond.

Nikki Miller
Sadly our hard working and very effective Finance Officer, Mrs Nikki Miller, is moving to Western Australia.

Nikki writes:
After 11 years of being part of the Diocesan Family, it is now time for a change. My husband Luke has taken a new position in Western Australia and we will be relocating there at the end of May. We are excited about the next chapter of our lives and being able to share this with our two children.
It has been an enjoyable 11 years with many memorable occasions along the way. I have been fortunate to work with a great team of supportive and wonderful people at the Registry Office. I would like to extend a thank you to everyone in the Diocesan family for the interesting chats, support and prayers throughout my time at the Diocese. Thank you again, Nikki

Nikki is an invaluable member of our administration team and will be hard to replace. However it is good that she and Luke are moving forward in life and we wish Nikki and Luke every blessing for their future.
I am grateful that Nikki will continue to support us remotely while we find a replacement. The position of Finance Officer will be advertised in the near future.

Kenneth Lay’s Mother
I am sorry to report the death of Mrs Edna Lay, the mother of the Rev’d Dr Kenneth Lay (Rector of Mossman and Port Douglas). The funeral is to be held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Gosford NSW, on Friday 10th May at 1.30 pm. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for all those who mourn, especially Fr Kenneth and his sister Ruth.

Thy Kingdom Come
This is an ecumenical initiative from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Anglican Communion Office asking us to pray for those who need to know Jesus Christ. It is strongly commended as a form of prayer during the week of Christian Unity, which is from Ascension (30th May this year) to Pentecost (9th June). E-mail Address
Telstra have disconnected my personal e-mail address (keij@bigpond.com) – apparently, after being linked to my mobile phone for twenty years they decided to link it to my NBN in Darwin. So when I moved it was orphaned and therefore removed without any warning or questions. Needless to say I am not happy. However my work e-mail (bishopnq@anglicannq.org) is unaffected and should be the e-mail of choice for most of you. Likewise for work matters the best phone contact is either the office on 07 4771 4175 (opt 1) or the Bishop’s mobile number which most of you have.

Prayer Points

We pray for:
• Cameron and Renee Wills and their children; may they be upheld by love
• The people of Sri Lanka, especially the injured and those who mourn
• Recovery of those affected by flooding, especially in North-West Queensland
• We commend Edna Lay and June Dolgner to our loving God and pray for all who mourn, especially Fr Kenneth and Ruth; and Geoff and Joanna
• We give thanks for Nikki Miller’s work and pray for her and Luke as they move to North-West Australia
• For those who do not know Jesus Christ

May God be with you all!

The Right Reverend Dr Keith Joseph
Bishop of North Queensland
